Fertility Pills: Do They Work?

hi dra!

pwede ba mag take ng clomid kahit nag oovulate na ako?  TTC kami ng husband ko and baka makatulong ang clomid sa amin, thank you.

Dear J.

Clomid or Clomiphene citrate is one of the fertility tablets that we prescribe to women to help them ovulate.

It is an “anti-estrogen”. Women taking clomiphene will fool their bodies into thinking that there is very low estrogen levels so the brain will secrete more follicle stimulating hormone to make the ovary “super” ovulate.

This is good for women who do not have monthly ovulations, but might be useless and even harmful for women who already ovulate.

Side effects of taking clomiphene are the following:

1. Hot flashes, night sweats, emotional lability, mood swings. All these are due to the anti-estrogen effect of clomiphene

2. Abdominal discomfort, nausea and vomiting

3. Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome. Ovulation is due to the stimulation of one follicle by the follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) to allow that one follicle to enlarge to as big as 2 cms so that it will rupture and release an egg. Can you imagine taking clomiphene and allowing 10-12 follicles to enlarge to 2 cms each … that would increase the size of one ovary to as much as 20 cms!

This is when the patient may feel abdominal pain and discomfort. But not to worry. The cysts shrink on their own after a few weeks.

4. Twins, triples or more. Due to the overstimulation of the ovary, there is a 10-25% chance of multiple gestation in women taking this fertility tablet.

Finally, clomiphene isalso being used to treat male infertility. It increases the sperm count similar to the effect of testosterone.

For you J, kung gusto mong magka-chance na magkaanak ng twins, you may try clomiphene. Take 1 tablet once a day for 5 days beginning on the 2nd day of your period.

Just be aware of the side effects. If you feel any discomfort, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain … proceed to the emergency room immediately!
